I’ve had finished the figure awhile ago, but just recently went back and livened up the sky, water reflection, and cattle. Illustration for the “Lost Boys of Sudan” picture book.

Colors of Pastel Paper
I needed to order Pastel Paper for the oil pastel illustrations. The paper I was using seemed a little dark for the for landscapes. Any paper showing in the sky was too dark and light colors shown the dark paper color through. The new lighter color paper on top is exposed on the corners. I was concerned that changing paper color might not match what I have already done. That’s why I did this test, in soft pastel I couldn’t change paper color. This test proves I can change the color of the paper and still have consistency. I like the lighter paper better. I always work in the first layer into the paper or the color paper would show more.
Layout for Next Illustration
I blew up my sketch for this page to the size I’m going to render it 28″x11.5″. I refined it and populated the village. The huts were arranged in composition that was pleasing.

I liked this pose, there interesting form and line. Lots of foreshortening, but that keeps it interesting. Polychromos Pastels on Brown Strathmore Pastel Paper. 12×18″ approx.
Book Cover for David’s Journey
This is the cover, not approved yet. Rendered in oil pastel on brown paper 11.5″x14″ scale 127%. One of the most challenging pages, since it had so many people and had to come from my imagination, and from a country I’ve never been. I could have photographed the back cover adjoined to it. I will do that tomorrow.
New Life Drawing of Female Nude
Our room where we normally do our life drawing at the Art Museum was occupied for the evening. We ended up in a store room, but there was grand piano, what luck! I have to work that in later. I see I drew piano too small so I will have to fix that. I spent my hour and a half concentrating on the figure and getting it done. The hands were fanned out and toes were curled, that was most challenging, but I think that worked. Polychromos Pastel on Brown Pastel Paper 12×19″. I liked the Polychromos Pastels would like to have set of 60. 😉

This is a rough concept sketch for the front and back cover of “David’s Journey; A Lost Boy of Sudan”. Yes, after much debate between my coleagues it has a title now. 😉 The image depicts 1000 mile walk to Kenya. Next I will draw a actual size drawing or maybe I’ll draw it at a 127% which is the size I will render it.
