Next “Valley at Enemy Creek” WIP01

I want to do another version of “Valley of Enemy Creek” It was one of my best projects and I want to be able to exhibit the work.

I started again with a study because I might as well make some adjustments to the composition, since it doesn’t need to be exactly as it is in real life.
Mainly I move the tree to the right, and changed the direction of the water in the foreground. The first painting I did is in recent posts.

The study is 9×12″ and the final will probably be 18×24″.

Thunderhead Over Rolling Plains

imageIt’s a good day to remember summer days. Tomorrow we will have a high of -7. I think will paint a snow scene next though. I won’t be painting it outside!

I got a little more done today. This rugged terrain, spotted with cedar trees is very interesting to paint. The distant land in background is behind the veil of humidity for depth. I hope I will have time to work on it again tomorrow.

This a study for a commission. It is a panoramic view from the owner’s property. She is a friend from my childhood, and this was once her Grandparent’s land. We wish to preserve it’s memory.
This study is a 10″x16″ stretched canvas. I wish to learn from the practice of the study, and use it as inspiration for the final canvas that will be 30″x48″

This painting was satisfactory as it was, but it was needling me, from the wall it was hanging. I had to repaint the sky to give it more punch. I’m glad I did it! 7″x 14″

Storm on the Horizon – Restart Underpainting WIP02

image

I’m on vacation a good part of July, but back at home at the moment. I went to make adjustments on my underpainting of the first version, and realized the lightly textured board was probably not going to be to my liking for this. Here is a redo of my underpainting on stretched canvas 18″x24″ I like the new composition better, I wanted more sky,a bigger storm cloud, and a lower horizon.
