I attended a Plein Air Outing at Pointer’s Ridge near Sioux Falls, SD. I would like to do further studies of this subject, and do a bigger painting. I enjoyed meeting with my painting buddies again.

Frost Fest Plein Air (Part 1)
I went to our Nature Park to do a little plein air watercolor painting. I wanted to steak out the locations for our Frost Fest Plein Air Outing this weekend. I will probably do an acrylic painting on Saturday. It will be nice this weekend too, but hopefully the snow won’t be all melted.

It’s a good day to remember summer days. Tomorrow we will have a high of -7. I think will paint a snow scene next though. I won’t be painting it outside!

Although I will probably see little touches of strokes I want to add, I am finished, fin! Although I need to sign and paint the gallery edges which are 1.5″ depth.

Valley of Enemy Creek (WIP02)
I’ve made progress on the big canvas. 30″x48″ The middle and foreground trees are next.
On the creek there are adjustments to make it more like actual place, but overall I think it’s working.

This week I’ve been focused on the big painting. I will probably still be adding color and lighting adjustments to some of these areas.
30″x 48″ canvas.
When I sketch my paintings, I use watercolor pencil and push my lines around with water and a brush. I usually paint the background yellow, tan, rust, or even red. I use gesso with a little fluid acrylic, in this case Indian Yellow. I never leave it white!

I’ve finished my study, although I may do a few little tweeks here and there. I have learned many lessons and how to approach the larger painting to come next. It’s bound to be different in some respects, but I look for the next to be beyond the first. I will use the biggest brushes I have, occasionally even some 2 to 4″ and lots of paint! I’m looking forward to it! I can paint the undercoat now, because it came Fed Ex today. 🙂
This commissioned painting reminds me of the benefits of doing work for others. It’s pulled me out of my everyday choices for compositions and challenged me with something new, and I think I have gained inspiration from it, thank you!

I wanted to have this finished by now, but I have a cold. I am happy with it though. I’m looking forward to the big canvas. The trees are next. There are little cedars here and there, and then the big tree.

Finished the creek on this study for a bigger painting. There are many small trees that will be painted after it’s dry.

When I get to the big painting I will probably take the week off my other projects and work solely on the big canvas, and get most of it done. I don’t want to break up my time as much as I have with this study. I’m busier than usual. This is why I have less blog entries too.
